Cordoba Open Preview & Predictions

The first ever Cordoba Open will be taking place this coming week. The tournament is replacing the now defunct Ecuador Open Quito. This tournament will be the first clay court tournament of the season & is featuring some of the best clay court players in the world.

With 7 Argentinian players in the draw, the spectators will have plenty of reason to come out & support. Highlighted by 3rd seed & world #20, Diego Schwartzman, there is a strong likelihood an Argentinian player makes the final here in the first ever year for the tournament.

Draw Analysis

Without any doubt in my mind, the strongest quarter of this draw belongs to Pablo Carreno Busta. For the star Spaniard, a projected second round matchup against rising Brit, Cameron Norrie, on a surface that favours him, spells trouble. If PCB is to escape that, Nicolas Jarry is projected to be waiting in the Quarter Finals, who is by far & away the most dangerous player seeded 5-8.

The top half of the draw is fairly straightforward. Pablo Cuevas could pose some trouble in the early rounds, as could the winner of Garin-Ramos Vinolas. However, I’d expect top seeds Fognini & Schwartzman to progress to the Semi Finals.

Upset Alert

I can see a potential upset in the bottom quarter of the draw, with the winner of Mayer-Delbonis a chance to progress through to the Semi Finals. Pablo Cuevas is also one who I’m expecting will cause trouble against the inconsistent Fabio Fognini, if those two are to meet in the 3rd Round.

One To Watch

The One To Watch here in Cordoba is Nicolas Jarry. Jarry experienced tremendous success throughout the 2018 season, resulting in a rise of almost 70 ranking spots by the end of the season. A very good clay-courter, Jarry has received a favourable draw in the first two rounds & with momentum, could go in confident against Pablo Carreno Busta.

My predicted winner however will be coming from the top half of the draw. I’m predicting Diego Schwartzman to take out the title at the debut of this tournament. He will be happy with his half of the draw & the ups/downs of Fognini may not even have him make it to the Semi Final. I’m expecting him to then meet either Pablo Carreno Busta & Nicolas Jarry in the final and to be victorious.
